Member Bio:

Claudia Marion Stemberger earned a Magister Degree in Art History from the University of Vienna, completed her Master's in Arts Management at the Johannes Kepler University of Linz, and holds a Doctor of Medicine from the Karl Franzens University in Graz.

At the Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies at Duke University, Claudia Marion Stemberger works on modern and contemporary art, in particular the (Western) intellectual history of contingency in art, the history of art in South Africa, and decolonizing the pedagogy of art history.

Her dissertation draws attention to the centrality of the idea of contingency in aesthetic movements, and traces how the concept was understood in art during the modern and postmodern age. By positioning ideas of contingency in art in Western intellectual histories, her research seeks to underline the importance of the art historical discipline in intellectual inquiry for how cultural producers, art critics, and art historians reflected the idea of contingency across selected examples of European and North American art practices and discourses.
